'Not acceptable': CJP claims Supreme Court order on student FIRs contradicts govt assurances 'Not acceptable': CJP claims Supreme Court order on student FIRs contradicts govt assurances CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke also warned of fresh protest if the government missed the Tuesday deadline on FIR withdrawal. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday said the Supreme Court's interim order allows authorities to continue investigating FIRs registered during the nationwide student protests, adding that it was contrary to the Centre's assurances during negotiations that led to the withdrawal of the agitation. Chief spokesperson Saurav Das said that the party’s understanding with the government was that FIRs against protesters would be withdrawn and expected the assurance to be honoured. “The Supreme Court has now said that FIRs that were already registered will not be withdrawn. This is not what was discussed in our negotiations with the government,” Das said in an interview. "Our understanding with the government was different, and we expect it to fulfil the assurances it gave us. The conditions being imposed by the Supreme Court are not acceptable to us,” he added. Das said the Supreme Court’s order should be seen as "in addition" to the CJP’s demands and urged the government to honour its commitments made to protesters. Interim custody of vehicle seized in criminal case cannot be decided based on registration certificate alone: Supreme Court The Supreme Court recently held that a registration certificate alone does not determine who is entitled to interim custody of a vehicle seized during a criminal investigation [Krishnan Narayana v. A Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Augustine George Masih said courts must look at the overall circumstances instead of relying only on the vehicle's registration certificate while deciding interim custody applications. “Registration is a relevant factor, but it is evidentiary and not conclusive of entitlement to interim possession..The exercise of this power requires the Court to make only a prima facie assessment of who is best entitled to possession, having regard to the nature of the property, the circumstances of seizure and the material placed before it. It does not comprise an adjudication of ownership,” the Bench said. It made the observation while deciding a dispute over interim custody of a pick-up truck, three excavators and a tipper seized during a police investigation. The dispute arose after one Krishnan Narayana, a granite businessman, alleged that officials of a company named Earth Stein illegally took away the vehicles from the premises of his company, M/s Pure Minerals. It claimed the vehicles had been purchased using company funds that Narayana had allegedly misappropriated the same while he was one of its directors. Rival criminal cases were later registered by both sides. After the police seized the vehicles, both Narayana and Earth Stein sought interim custody.

P&H High Court clarifies remark about advocates' strike after lawyers' sloganeering The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday expressed concern over the continuous strike by various bar bodies in Punjab against implementation of the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System (LADCS) [Arvind Seth v State of Punjab and Others] A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor said, "We have reiterated our sentiments to the learned members of the bar that denial of access to justice, to the common litigant, would be a failure on the part of the entire justice delivery system, which cannot be permitted." The Court also noted that certain oral observations made by it on Monday were reportedly "misquoted at certain forums." The Bench sought to clarify that it had only expressed its pain and anguish over the continued and prolonged blocking of access to justice to the common litigant in for past 27 days. It expressed regret that despite issuance of detailed directions to address the grievances of protesting lawyers, such projection was made. "We note with regret that despite the fact that detailed directions have been issued, in order to assuage the apprehension of the Members of the Bar, regarding implementation of LADC Scheme, yet, such a concocted projection is sought to be made," the Bench said. Pertinently, advocates at Punjab and Haryana High Court today demanded an apology from the acting Chief Justice for his remark that lawyers were "shamelessly" blocking access to court. On Monday, the Court had said that it was willing to address genuine grievances of the advocates but not allow denial of access to justice. The Court had also called out the lawyers for fighting against each other, stating that in this process they were "shamelessly" blocking the courts. The Court had made the remark while hearing a public interest litigation…

Raj Kundra moves Bombay High Court to quash PMLA cognizance, ED summons in Bitcoin case

Raj Kundra moves Bombay High Court to quash PMLA cognizance, ED summons in Bitcoin case Businessman Raj Kundra, husband of actress Shilpa Shetty, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking quashing of the cognizance order and summons issued to him by a special PMLA court in the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) Bitcoin‑linked money laundering case [Ripusudan Raj Kundra v. The petition came up before Justice Ashwin Bhobe on Tuesday when the ED sought time to take instructions. The Court acceded to the request and adjourned the case to August 6 for further hearing. The case arose from a 2019 prosecution complaint filed by the ED against directors of Variable Tech Pte Ltd, Gainbitcoin.com promoter Amit Bhardwaj and others, in which the special court had taken cognizance in February 2024. A further supplementary complaint was filed in September 2025 by which Kundra was added as an accused. According to ED, Kundra received 285 Bitcoins—valued at around ₹150.47 crore—from Bhardwaj between July and August 2017, and refused to disclose wallet details or surrender the Bitcoins. The allegations also include a low‑value sale transaction with Shetty in respect of their Juhu “Ocean View” flats to allegedly disguise the origin of funds. On January 5, the special PMLA court took cognizance of a supplementary prosecution complaint of September 2025 and initiated proceedings against Kundra.
