Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Legal Education
Diversity, equity and inclusion are important themes that have captured our imagination of late, simply because of the pressing needs of society today. Yet, precious little has been done towards promoting inclusivity within the classroom, as we all vie for learners who come in with strong foundational and language skills. The more the better, as they can then effectively serve as brand ambassadors for our respective institutions. Thinking a little differently, we at Vinayaka Mission's Law School have been experimenting with techniques to ensure that no learner is left behind, and to see to it that even a student who thinks in Tamil can learn the law in English. While nowhere near perfection, our techniques - use of visual learning, translation of materials, activity based learning approaches, contextualizing the learning content through references to material the learner can relate to, and similar methods - may be of help to the legal educator of today to forge a better learner and a better tomorrow.
