Press Club condemns detention of journalists covering protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar The Press Club of India (PCI), in a statement issued in New Delhi on Saturday (September 26, 2026), condemned the Delhi Police’s decision to detain two journalists, Frontline’s Vedaant Lakhera and The Wire’s Mohammamd Irfan, who were covering a protest at Jantar Mantar on Friday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The PCI said in the statement that the two journalists were wearing their press IDs at the time. “Ironically, Mr. Lakhera was detained while asking Delhi Police personnel why they were not wearing name tags. Lakhera was dragged to the Parliament Street police station and told to delete a picture, which he did not do, before he was let go, Mr. Irfan was taken to the police station in Dwarka and detained for several hours along with protesters before being released. At Jantar Mantar, a policeman also snatched his mic which bore the organisation’s logo and tossed it aside. It could not be found after that,” PCI president Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty and Secretary-General Afzal Imam said in the statement. “That the Delhi Police, controlled directly by the Union Home Ministry, would behave in this manner against journalists at the centre of the national capital is a matter of grave concern,” they added. FIR against Maktoob In a separate statement, the PCI criticised the West Bengal Police’s FIR against Maktoob Media for its reporting on alleged exclusion of Muslim IAS and IPS officers from meetings during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visits to the State. “There has been no official denial; yet the police have gone ahead with filing an FIR on the matter.

About four years later, the US government has recovered roughly $375,000 of the fraud proceeds through a federal forfeiture case. The US Department of Justice (DOJ), in an announcement from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, said the money had been moved through other accounts after the original payments were made. The case highlights how business email compromise scams can exploit routine payment processes and how stolen funds can be difficult to trace once they are moved between accounts. How the Iowa company was tricked The fraud involved a business email compromise scheme, a type of scam in which criminals impersonate trusted individuals or organisations to persuade employees to transfer money or take another action. The impersonation can involve company executives, vendors or other familiar contacts. In this case, the scammer posed as vendors of the Iowa company and instructed an employee to send payments to a different bank account. The company believed the instructions were legitimate and, during the middle of 2022, sent payments totalling more than $800,000 to the scammer-controlled account.

The Chamoli district administration in Uttarakhand on Saturday banned, with immediate effect, events near Badrinath Dham temple and other religious sites in the district that compromise their sanctity through the use of high-frequency sound systems, following objections to a musical festival held near Badrinath shrine earlier this month. District Magistrate Chamoli Gaurav Kumar has directed that prior permission from the local administration be mandatory for organising any event near religious and cultural sites in the district, including Shri Badrinath Dham. The concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) will personally examine the proposed event and issue permission. No other department or official will be authorised to grant such permission, he said. Officials have been directed to ensure strict compliance, with legal action to be taken against organisers or committees violating the order. The move follows objections from a section of citizens, including religious leaders, devotees and civil society members, to the two-day Devbhoomi Cultural Festival 2026 held at the newly developed tourist arrival plaza near Badrinath Dham on September 19 and 20. Ashutosh Dimri, president of Teerth Shri Badri Dham Dharmic Panchayat, said Badrinath is a major spiritual centre for Hindus worldwide.

Candidates challenge 27 UPSC Prelims questions in tribunal over “incorrect” answers, “ambiguity” At least 27 questions in this year’s Civil Services Examination (CSE) Prelims, across general studies and aptitude papers, have come under dispute, with candidates claiming that the answers in the Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC) provisional answer key are either incorrect, have no correct answer or allow more than one possible answer. At least two groups of aspirants have challenged the questions before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). One group of four candidates have challenged eight questions, while another group of 63 aspirants have challenged 27 questions, including the eight challenged in the first petition. On September 9, the tribunal issued a notice to the UPSC regarding the 27 questions. The two cases will next be heard together on October 8. The preliminary examination was held on May 24, and the provisional answer key was uploaded three days later. In June, candidates were informed whether they had qualified for the Mains examination, which was held in August. The examination has three stages—Preliminary, Mains, and interview.
