Rs 35 cr horse trading allegations: Madras HC grants anticipatory bail to Senthil Balaji CHENNAI: Madras high court on Wednesday granted conditional anticipatory bail to DMK MLA and former minister V Senthil Balaji and his brother R V Ashok Kumar in connection with the case for alleged Rs 35 crore horse trading attempt to destabilize the ruling TVK govt. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan passed the order on the pleas moved by Senthil Balaji and Ashok Kumar apprehending arrest in connection with the case. The court has directed the petitioners to appear before the investigating officer twice a day until further orders. According to the petitioners, their names do not figure in the FIR registered by the Chennai police and yet the police are trying to drag them into the case due to political motives. The issue pertains to a complaint made by TVK Uthangarai MLA N Elaiyaraja on June 29 alleging that he had been offered Rs 35 crore as a bribe to destabilize the ruling TVK govt.

Any errors can invite questions from the Income tax Department, which may eventually lead to a tax notice as well. The error could be as simple as wrong ITR form selection, not reporting capital gains, or even forgetting to add interest income earned from all your banks One important thing to understand is this: In the current compliance environment, tax notices are increasingly driven by data inconsistencies rather than intent. “With the Income Tax Department leveraging advanced analytics and third-party reporting, even minor gaps in reporting can trigger system-based queries,” says Amarpal Chadha, Tax Partner, EY India. A tax notice can not only mean a process of explaining discrepancies but can also put any refund claims on hold till the matter is resolved. So, what are the common mistakes that can lead to tax department queries or notices? On July 6, the Directorate General of Health Services, Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), published a notice inviting comments on the use of brand name extensions by Pharma Companies. This stems from a representation made before the Drugs Consultative Committee alleging that a pharma company was selling different formulations under one brand name with different extensions. However, this problem has been a long-standing one, as explained by Prashant and Dinesh Thakur.

Tribunal awards ₹31.43 lakh compensation to kin of Thane man killed in 2020 road accident The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal in Thane has awarded a compensation of ₹31.43 lakh to the family of a man killed in a road accident, while holding him 15% contributorily negligent for staying too close to the vehicle ahead. In its order on Tuesday (July 8, 2026), the MACT directed the owner of a tempo involved in the accident and its insurer to jointly and severally pay the amount to the family of the victim, Rajaram Narayan Mhatre, with 9% interest per annum from the date of the petition. According to the order, Mhatre was driving his Innova behind an Eicher tempo on the Pune-Nashik road on December 25, 2020, when the tempo driver suddenly applied the brakes without any signal or indication. Mhatre’s car crashed into the tempo, resulting in his death. While the insurance company argued that Mhatre was solely responsible for the crash as he rammed the vehicle from behind, the Tribunal Member R.V. Mohite noted that both drivers shared responsibility. The tribunal also noted that Mhatre did not maintain a “safe distance” between the tempo and his Innova car. Assessing the negligence of the tempo driver at 85% and Mhatre at 15%, the tribunal initially computed the total compensation at ₹36.98 lakh.

Sugathan suffers fresh setback as KAAPA advisory board upholds six-month detention R. Sugathan, a BJP councillor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in Kerala, has suffered another major setback after the KAAPA advisory board upheld his six-month preventive detention under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). The board rejected his plea to revoke the detention order, and confirmed that he will remain in custody for the full six-month period. The accused is listed on the Vattiyurkavu police’s rowdy history sheet and is facing 19 criminal cases registered in the Vattiyurkavu and Nedumangad police stations over the years. These include four cases of attempted murder, along with offences including rioting, causing hurt and criminal intimidation. The police have already filed chargesheets in 18 of the cases. Sugathan as its candidate from the Vazhottukonam ward in the last local body elections, where he was elected as councillor. In view of the advisory board’s decision, he will also remain barred from entering Thiruvananthapuram district for the duration of the six-month detention period.
